Bell & Gossett Series 90 In-Line Mounted Centrifugal Pumps

Bell & Gossett Series 90 In-Line Mounted Centrifugal Pumps

As you may already know Centrifugal pumps operations rely on centrifugal force as the fundamental principle. Centrifugal force affects an object or material moving in a circular pattern by causing it to pull away from the central axis or center point of the path along which it travels. The rotational energy comes from an engine or electric motor. This force can be used to regulate the pressure and motion within a pumping unit, and when applied in combination with a number of other centrifugal pumping principles, forms an integral part of hydraulic mechanisms. The common uses include water, sewage, petroleum and petrochemical pumping.

Series 90 In-Line Centrifugal Pump by Bell & Gossett

The Series 90 In-Line Centrifugal Pump is a great addition to the series in particular to the HVAC sector. This is a close coupled, space saving, low maintenance pump. It is designed to expertly perform a wide range of fluid applications. The Back Pull Out feature enables servicing of the pump without disturbing system piping. The Series 90 pumps are available from 1" to 2" pipe sizes (1/4 HP through 2 HP at 1750 RPM and 1/2 through 15 HP at 3500 RPM. Available in bronze-fitted construction with flows to 200 GPM, heads to 225 feet).

Series 90 Pumps may be used for refrigeration and heater exchanger circulation, hydronic heating and cooling, domestic hot water, cooling towers, machinery cooling, pressure boosting, industrial fluid transfer etc. It may be of assurity to you that Bell & Gossett’s internally flushed BUNA/Carbon ceramic seal makes the Series 90 perfectly hassle free pump and quite safe for engaging them in hazardous liquid transfers. Another advantage of the sophisticated design of the B&G Series 90 is that it is an excellent all-purpose pump designed for vertical and horizontal in-line mounting. The operational limits of these pumps are 225ºF maximum working temperature and 175 PSI maximum working pressure.

Installation

There are certain points you need to know for the installation. The Bell & Gossett Series 90 Pump should always be installed where there will be enough space for any inspection, maintenance and service during its lifetime. It is also highly advisable to install service valves (shut-off) on each side of the pump to facilitate servicing or replacing without draining the system. Special precautions should be taken to avoid sound and vibration transmission. If the pump is to be located near a noise sensitive area the area must be acoustic designed to make it sound proof. Caution must be taken if it is required to lift the entire pump; always place slings around the pump assembly to safely lift it.

Installation Process

  • Always install a section of straight pipe between the suction side of the pump and the first elbow. The length of this pipe should be equal to five times the diameter of the suction pipe size. This reduces turbulence of the suction by streamlining the liquid flow path before its entry to the pump.
  • Make sure air is always kept out of the system.
  • On an open system always place the end of the suction pipe at least three feet (3') below the surface of the water in the suction well to prevent air from being drawn into the pump.
  • Avoid air pockets in the suction line and ensure that each section of the suction pipe is absolutely air tight.
  • If high temperature variation is anticipated, expansion fittings should be installed so that it reduces pump strain.
  • Make sure to install the suction and discharge flanges on the pipe ends using Teflon tape sealer or high quality thread sealant.
  • Minimize strain on the pump by supporting the suction and discharge piping with pipe hangers near the pump. Line up the vertical and horizontal piping so that the bolt-holes in both the pump and pipe flanges are aligned.
  • Do not attempt to spring the suction or discharge lines into position. This may result in unwanted stress in the pump body, flange connections and/or piping.
  • It is very important to provide strong, rigid support for the suction and discharge lines. No ordinary wire or band hangers are useful enough to maintain alignment.
  • New Bell & Gossett flange gaskets must be installed between the flanges of the pump body and suction and discharge pipes.
  • The gaskets should be clean and grease-free. Never use old or used gaskets.
  • Suitable fasteners for this connection are supplied in the Bell & Gossett fastener pack.
  • Apply a torque of 8-11 ft. lbs. to each of the flange bolts. Both the suction and discharge flanges must be torqued to the same level.

How to Operate?

Before initiating the pump, closed heating and cooling systems should be flushed with clean water and drained. The system should then be filled with clean water having a PH level between 7 and 9.

Lubrication of the pump is as important as for any other for its healthy maintenance. The Series 90 Pumps with 5 HP and smaller motors are permanently lubricated. But Pumps with 7.5, 10 and 15 HP motors come with grease fittings and those needs to be lubricated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
